“The student´s unique conditions” : School nurse’s experiences of promoting healthy lifestyle habits in children with neuropsychiatric disorders (English)
Abstract [sv]

Metod: Nio skolsköterskor deltog i intervjuer.

Abstract [en]

Background: Unhealthy lifestyle habits exist to a greater extent in children with neuropsychiatric diagnoses such as impaired sleep, eating disorders, less physical activity and increased screen time. Creating relationships through individualized treatment benefits children with NPF. The school nurse works on health promotion and prevention through, among other things, health talks. The school nurse's work must be based on person-centred care where the focus is on the student's own resources.Aim: The aim was to describe school nurses' experiences of promoting healthy lifestyle habits in children with neuropsychiatric disorders.Method: Nine school nurses participated in interviews. Data were analyzed according to content analysis on a manifest level. Results: The result is presented through two generic categories - Building good relationships and Working together around the students. The school nurse's experience was that communication and participation were the main tools for building a good relationship with the students. The importance of internal and external collaboration was also highlighted as central to promoting healthy lifestyles. Conclusion: Good relationships and collaboration around students are two important factors in promoting healthy lifestyle habits in children with neuropsychiatric disorders. Through the health visits, the school nurse can identify early signs of unhealthy lifestyle habits or deteriorating mental well-being and can then be of help and support to the student.
