Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: When psychotic patients stop their medication with antipsychotic drugs, this entails risks that can cause suffering, impaired cognitive function and increased risk of suicide. The research shows that this patient group is at risk of premature death if positive compliance is not achieved. The psychiatric nurse has a collaborative key role in building a care relationship, providing information and education to patients with psychosis illness and their relatives.

Aim: To describe the psychiatric nurse's experience of the patient's compliance with antipsychotic drugs.

Method: A qualitative method with an inductive approach was used and conducted through semi-structured interviews with twelve psychiatric nurses in psychosis clinics i southern Sweden. The selection was appropriate, and the material was analyzed with qualitative content analysis.

Results: The overarching theme was solution-oriented care based on trust, which emerged in the latent analysis. It is based on the manifest analysis where three categories emerged; Information contributes to compliance; Cooperation contributes to compliance and Compliance reduces suffering.

Conclusion: The psychiatric nurse's experience that the psychotic patient should experience a well-functioning life is decisive that the patient has a positive compliance with antipsychotic drugs, mainly in the form of depot injections. This is achieved through long-term contacts and a caring relationship.
