Abstract [en]

This study examines Hungarian young tourists’ perception of Swedish people's culture, sustainable behaviour and their socio-cultural encounters with foreign tourists, furthermore,as how they value different cultural and behavioural norms.

Problem - Researching how young Hungarian tourists perceive Swedish people’s sustainable behaviour, in the context of their travel to Stockholm and its urban areas is beneficial, firstly due to the lack of research on the topic of social-cultural sustainability and behaviour, in addition, to social-cultural conflicts and tension in tourism. Secondly, due to the importance of the younger generation's sustainability and understanding of sustainable behaviour and the existing gap between generations' behaviour, values and sustainable practices. Lastly, due to the lack of research on Hungarians travelling to Stockholm, acknowledging the cultural and social differences between Hungary and Sweden. Purpose - The purpose of this qualitative study is to get a deeper understanding of how younger tourists perceive and value local culture, sustainable behaviour in a different culture and how exposure to different cultures affects tourists. Method - The study is based on a qualitative research method, where fifteen participants were recruited through semi-structured interviews through online Zoom meetings and online video calls. Limitation - Delimitations include focusing greatly on Hungarian tourists, between the ages of 25 and 35 since the research examines how young tourists perceive Swedish people's sustainability and sustainable behaviour, utilizing qualitative research methods, and conducting interviews within a certain timeframe. Conclusion - Young Hungarian tourists generally view Swedish people as environmentally conscious, and likely educated from a younger age. They perceive Swedish locals as caring deeply about sustainability, maintaining a good work-life balance, enjoying their high qualityof life and encouraging a clean and well-organised environment. Young Hungarian tourists believe that Swedish people are helpful, kind and polite towards foreigners and tourists. Although Swedes may sometimes seem reserved and try to avoid interactions, when they do engage, they do so with respect and kindness. Moreover, young Hungarian tourists valued Swedish cultural and behavioural norms for their environmental consciousness, their respectful and polite social behaviour and their highly organised social system which supported their positive experience in their travel to Stockholm or its urban areas.
