I just sort of kept going : A qualitative interview study about instrument teachers’ ideas regarding student motivation and perseverance (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to investigate what experienced cultural schoolteachers consider to be the most significant contributors to students' motivation and perseverance, and to relate this to literature and research within the same field. The study is based on a motivational theoretical perspective with an interpretivist epistemology. Previous literature and research are presented, addressing motivation both generally and from an instrumental teaching perspective. Semi-structured interviews with cultural schoolteachers have been used as the method of data collection, which were then processed through thematic analysis to produce results. The results reveal the motivational factors that teachers believe most significantly affect students: communion and belonging, progression and self-confidence, as well as creativity and self-expression. Furthermore, these are influenced by motivational conditional factors, practical conditional factors, and the role and support of parents. Additionally, the necessity of a balance between everyday teaching, where students are given opportunities to develop, and events beyond this, such as concerts and trips, which motivate students, are highlighted. All of this contributes to cultivating students' intrinsic motivation in the long term, which enhances both their general motivation and their perseverance. In the discussion, the results are compared to previous literature and research, where teachers' provided perceptions are related to the literature within the subject. Finally, a methodological discussion is presented, which problematizes the execution of the study.
