VZr is known from the 5 HP project to be amorphous and absorb hydrogen and desorb hydrogen. However, owing to the strong binding of hydrogen to zirconium, the desorption at high temperatures is needed, which limits the use of this material. Another limitation for applications is the weight of the material. It is proposed to substitute some of the zirconium with a lighter element, like aluminum, which is also known to exhibit a more negative enthalpy of mixing with zirconium than with vanadium. AlVZr therefore holds promise not only as a lighter material for hydrogen storage, but could also allow for desorption at lower temperatures.
