How does Community Sports Affect the Integration of Immigrants into Swedish Society? : A Qualitative Study on Immigrants Integration Opportunities through Sports (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this IMER- related study is to show how participation in clubsports have impacted immigrants immigration as well as adaptation to the Swedish community in different ways. The chosen purpose about immigrants integration through club sports have identified those obstacles and opportunities based on the selected research questions. A qualitative method has been used in a form of semi structured interviews with participants who have been active in sports or who are currently active in sports and who have migrated to Sweden during the “refugee wave” between 2014-2016. The theoretical framework of the thesis has been Diaz’s integration theory along with Bourdieu’s and Putnam’s forms of capital, which have shaped the interview guide. The results of the study shows that clubsport can function fundamentally as promoting integration and it’s the relationships formed through sports that contribute to this. Additionally, the results suggest that sports are portrayed as a useful tool for language and cultural learning, which are significant contributing factors to social integration.
