Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka vad som påverkar upplevelsen av arbetsrelaterad stress hos socialsekreterare, vilka konsekvenser arbetsrelaterad stress kan leda till samt hur socialsekreterare hanterar arbetsrelaterad stress. För att besvara dessa frågor har en kvalitativ metod tillämpats med syfte att fånga upp socialsekreterarnas egna upplevelser. Urvalet var socialsekreterare på enheten för barn och ungdom som intervjuades genom semistrukturerade intervjuer och empirin har bearbetats genom en kvalitativ innehållsanalys. Studiens resultat analyserades med hjälp av tidigare forskningsstudier och två teorier; Karasek och Theorells (1990) teori om krav-, kontroll- och stödmodellen och Lazarus och Folkmans (1984) teorin om problemfokuserade- och emotionsfokuserade copingstrategier. Resultatet visar på att de främsta faktorerna som socialsekreterare upplever leder till stress är oförutsedda situationer och höga arbetskrav med begränsningar. Socialsekreterarna uppgav att de främsta konsekvenserna av arbetsrelaterad stress var någon form av psykisk eller fysisk påverkan samt att effektiviteten och kvaliteten i arbetet kan påverkas negativt. De mest förekommande strategier som socialsekreterarna använde sig av för att hantera arbetsrelaterad stress var problemfokuserade copingstrategier, emotionsfokuserade copingstrategier, socialt stöd på och utanför arbetsplatsen och stöd och förutsättningar från verksamheten.  

The aim of this study is to investigate what influences the experience of work-related stress in social workers, what consequences work-related stress can lead to and how social workers deal with work-related stress. In order to answer these questions a qualitative method has been applied with the aim of eliciting the social workers own experiences. The sample was social workers at the unit for children and youth who were interviewed through semi-structured interviews and the empirical evidence has been processed through a qualitative content analysis. The results of the study was analyzed using previous research studies and two theories; Karasek and Theorell’s (1990) theory of the demand, control and support model and Lazarus and Folkman’s (1984) theory of problem-focused and emotion-focused coping strategies. The results show that the main factors that social workers experience as leading to stress are unforeseen situations and high work demands with limitations. The social workers stated that the main consequences of work-related stress were some form of psychological or physical impact and that the efficiency and quality of work can be negatively affected. The most common strategies used by the social workers to manage work-related stress were problem-focused coping strategies, emotion-focused coping strategies, social support in and outside the workplace and support and conditions from the workplace.
