Abstract [en]
The design project “Nourishing Diversity” explores the historical and contemporary connection between queerness and food. Heteronormativity, an institution, shaped by various factors has led to significant consequences for marginalised groups. This project addresses the research question: “How are representation and visibility of LGBTQ+ people created and generated through food?”
Using workshops and a dining experience facilitated by participatory design methods, the project explores the intersection of queerness and food. It aims to enhance the representation and visibility of queer individuals in food culture, contributing to sustainability by highlighting queer history through food. These topics, particularly the connection between queerness and food, are not well explored in existing literature or culture.
Collaborating with the LGBTQ+ community in Växjö and at Linnaeus University, the project fosters community building through cooking events. These events explore the connection between queerness, food and communal activities. The significands of community building through food and the issue of food insecurity within the LGBTQ+ community are discussed.
This project focuses on community creation, showcasing queer history through food, and fostering communal cooking experiences to create multi-layered representation and visibility. The outcomes of this project aim to not only highlight the often-overlooked queer contributions to food culture but also to inspire similar initiatives in other communities, thereby promoting inclusivity and diversity within broader food systems.
