The Scandalous Bullfinch Block : An Architecture Study of the Östermalm Prison and the Old School of Architecture as Stockholm’s Most Polarising Buildings (English)
Abstract [en]

This bachelor’s thesis presents an architecture study of two specific buildings in Stockholm, Sweden: the Östermalm Prison and the old School of Architecture. These two buildings have inhabited the same plot in the central part of the city called Östermalm and both have garnered strong reactions over the years, both positive and negative. The prison is no longer standing as it was demolished in the late sixties for the construction of the school of architecture. Both buildings have been praised for their significance as part of Stockholm’s history and marked by state institutions as having high cultural significance. However, they have also both been called the ugliest building in the city and many people have called for their demolitions.

This essay explores what about these buildings make them so polarising in relation to their historical, sociological, and geographical context, as well as their respective architectural expression. The buildings are very different from one another in terms of design and architectural style, but the buildings around them have remained the same for the entirety of the 20th century. Both the Östermalm Prison and the old School of Architecture have been deemed ugly, but this ugliness has less to do with the individual aspects of each building and much more to do with how people in the city interact with them, and how they in turn interact with the city around them.
