Captivating prejudices: An analysis of correctional officers perceptions on clients based onthe types of crimes the clients were convicted of (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine differences of correctional officers’ attitudes towards clients depending on what type of crime the client has been convicted of. Previous studies point to negative attitudes toward clients within correctional services makes reintegration into society more difficult for the client after completion of the sentence. This is in line with this study’s theoretical framework. To investigate the subject, a web survey was used, formulated with statements as tools to distinguish attitudes between different types of crimes. The sample consisted of 75 individuals that are working or have worked in close contact with clients within correctional services, of whom 47 were women (M = 134, SD = 21,6), and 28 were men (M = 147, SD = 22,9). The results shows that violent crime and sexual crime had higher levels of negative attitudes compared to property crime and drug related crime. Furthermore, the results indicated that men expressed higher levels of negative attitudes than women. Regarding how these negative attitudes were expressed, the results showed that the most frequent type of negative attitude was punitive, followed by distrust in rehabilitation, and the least frequent negative attitude being fear.
