Abstract [en]

This thesis will be discussing LoRa and its usage along with RIOT OS as well as answer the question: “What is a way to implement and use LoRa to be able to perform outdoor communication range tests in a densely populated area? What parameters need to be kept in mind during such tests, and how will the LoRa-link itself perform?”. This was done by using a pair of STM32 B-L072Z-LRWAN1 Discovery kits, with one being used as a receiver and the other a transmitter. Testing was done along Kistagången outside of KTH Kista Electrum. Test results were then compared to FSPL models and estimates. These showed that not only was LoRa able to be used in such a manner, the range at which it is able to do so for line-of-sight applications are much greater than what was possible during testing due to limitations of the testing locales.

Abstract [sv]

I den här avhandlingen kommer LoRa och dess användning i samband med operativsystemet RIOT diskuteras. Forskningsfrågan: “Hur kan man implementera och använda LoRa för att kunna utföra kommunikationstester utomhus i ett tättbebyggt område? Vilka parametrar behöver man ha i åtanke för sådana tester, och hur kommer LoRa-länken att prestera?” kommer att besvaras. Testerna utfördes genom att använda ett par STM32 B-L072Z-LRWAN1 Discovery kits, där en agerade som sändare och den andre som mottagare. Testerna utfördes längs med Kistagången utanför KTH Kista Electrum, där testresultatet jämfördes med FSPL-modeller och egna uppskattningar. Dessa visade att LoRa är väl anpassat för en sådan användning. Modellerna och uppskattningarna visade även att LoRa har större potential för line-of-sight applikationer än vad som kunde demonstreras genom testning på grund av det begränsade testområdet.
