A design study on digital technology in preschool: how QR codes contribute to children’s learning based on waste recycling (English)
Abstract [en]

The aim of my study is to contribute to more knowledge about how to work with digital tools in preschool teaching, with a focus on how the older children interact in learning about sustainable development. To find out how children use and understand digital technology, children were studied through video observation in a design study, in which four children aged 3-6years participated in two different groups in a garbage sorting activity, where they used a tablet and QR codes to sort different materials.

The results show that the tablet was mainly used to scan the QR codes and to do so the children used different strategies and their choices were influenced by their experience using the tablet. They mainly used the tablet by using various communicative movements based on body language, which was shown when the children used the QR codes as well. The children pointed and communicated a lot with each other to use the QR codes. It was also shown how their self-confidence increased over time in the study, the more they get to use the tablet and scan the QR codes and increase their awareness of the digital technology. Also, their collaborative skills within the group increased. The children who participated in the study expressed a basic understanding of what the various digital tools used were, but not a developed major understanding during the activity.
