In the last twenty years, the Early Iron Age society of the Central Norrland coastal area and the area around Lake Storsjön in Jämtland has been an important subject of research. Much ol this research has been conducted at the University of Umeå. The paper deals with exchange and trade systems in Central Norrland during the 1 st millennium AD. The main interest is focused upon the three main communication routes, the rivers Ängermanälven, Indalsäven and Ljungan. A number of key sites along these routes, at the river mouths and further upstream, give important information as to the development of society and the interaction between sedentary peasants and hunter-gatherers.
