Abstract [en]

During the 1930's in Sweden, at the same time as the country experienced a nativity crisis and a job crisis, the married women's right to gainful employment was under attack. A significant part of the governing people wanted women to stay at home and to only do the domestic work. But what did the women that were already working in this field, the housewives, think about this discussion? What were their standpoint? How did they see themselves in this context and what were their thoughts regarding their own work? These questions will this essay examine, by studying the member journal of the biggest and most important housewives’ organization in Sweden around this time, "Husmodersförbundet" (Housewives association). Previous research is lacking in this area and the purpose of this essay is to enlighten the reader in this particular field.

By using a qualitative method, and by reading all the editions of the member journal, several key themes have arisen. With the gender theory of Yvonne Hirdman and the working theory of Hannah Arendt, interesting and new knowledge in this area has emerged through the survey. Unlike previous research, this essay proves that "Husmodersförbundet" took a stand for the married women's right to work as early as 1933. This essay also shows, by using Arendts theory along with the results of the survey, that wages was not the key factor to raising the status of domestic work. This conclusion has arisen after studying the housewives' view on unpaid farmer wives versus paid maids in the member journal and will be further discussed in this essay.
