Maj -- are you good enough? : An analysis of class and gender in Kristina Sandberg's Att föda barn, Sörja för de sina and Liv till varje pris (English)
Abstract [en]

In this study I analyse the main character Maj Berglund and her character development in Kristina Sandberg’s book trilogy Att föda ett barn (2010), Sörja för de sina (2012) and Liv till varje pris(2014), with a focus on class and the female experience. I want to see how they two are shown through Maj, how she relates to her class position and how it may change through the books. Research questions are: how is Maj’s social standing shown? Is it changing through the books? What meaning do the motherhood and home wife ideal of the time have? How is respectability shown through Sandberg’s books and what does it do to Maj?

I have used Pierre Bourdieu as well as Beverley Skeggs, and in my analysis three themes: the body, the struggle and the new life. My results show that class, and because of class: respectability, is a crucial factor to Maj’s behavior and thoughts throughout the whole trilogy.
