"What if "bibblan" could present opportunities for in-dept studies..." : A study on user needs in a local context and a discussion about the democratic mission (English)
Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of this essay is to examine the attitudes of users to their physical library and its services in a local context.

Research questions: What do users think about various media and the library as a place for knowledge and learning? What do users think of program activities and the library as a place for inspiration? How do users view the library as a meeting place? How do users perceive the library as a place for creativity? How do users perceive the role of the library in society?

Model of study: We applied The Four Space Model, a model developed for public libraries, and considered it therefore suitable as a tool for development and analysis.

Method: The study consists of a survey, but the analysis was qualitative. The questionnaire was distributed over a three-week period and resulted in 54 individual replies.

Conclusions: The results of the survey showed that most respondents are satisfied with the activities, service and design of the library. Areas for development concern mainly different environments. The library, as a performative place, can be improved by more activities and the marketing of these activities. Room for improvement also concern the creation of better study environments.

A user survey, using the Four Space Model, can be used to discuss the library's democratic mission. By examining user attitudes towards the library it is possible to gain a deeper understanding of the context in which these operate. This provides a basis for evaluation in a local context and an opportunity to discuss the library's existence in both present and future. A discussion can provide a stronger legitimacy in society by starting from the library's democratic mission.
