Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Eating disorder include a number of disease states. Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are the two most common diagnoses. The common denominator for the two is that they are based on a disturbed body perception. Eating disorders causes both psychological and somatic disorders, which means that nurses in all areas need to have the skills and knowledge regarding the encounter with these patients.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the experiences of adult patients with eating disorders experience whilst meeting with health care professionals.

Method: A literature review with descriptive design and qualitative approach. The findings of the study were based on 11 original articles from the databases PubMed, CINAHL and PsycINFO.

Findings: Three main themes emerged control, person centered care and safety and trust The motivation for continued care decreased when the patients felt forced into treatment and a lack of control. Person centered care in terms of active participation played a big part for the patient’s experience. To be seen as a diagnosis instead of as an individual created anxiety, frustration and decreasing motivation. Negative attitude from healthcare professionals increased the patient’s anxiety and deteriorated the relationship between the two. Healthcare professionals with good knowledge and great experience about the disease created a feeling of safety and trust among the patients.

Conclusion: The meeting between the patient and the staff is a delicate situation which experience is influenced by a number of factors. The care and the treatment needs to be person centered since every human has different needs and preferences regarding the treatment. The patient’s autonomy needs to be respected in order for the experience to be perceived as positive as possible.
