Abstract [en]

In the political debates aired on Swedish television the days and months before the general election of 2018, the notion of difference was often articulated as one of the reasons for certain social issues plaguing the country. This discourse on difference regularly reproduced the conceptual pairs “Us” and “Them” where the difference of “Them” constituted a problem for “Us”. Coming from an anthropological perspective, this thesis conducts a study on what underlying understandings of cultural difference Swedish politicians draw upon while debating the differences between “Us” and “Them”. The purpose, however, of this thesis is not only to dissect the ways politicians speak about differences. Its purpose is also to look at the ways in which television frames discussion and makes politicians hesitant to challenge hegemonic understandings of difference. With a theoretical framework consisting of different understandings of culture and analytical concepts on political discourse, this thesis shows how several understandings of culture work simultaneously in constructing the differences between “Us” and “Them”. This contributes to a relationship between “our” and “their” values which is not in equilibrium. Rather, the values of “Us” are seen to be both optional and at the same time shared by all of “Us” while the values of “Them” are succumbed to homogeneity and cultural determination. Furthermore, this thesis demonstrates how time limits of television together with the hegemonic authority of the debate moderator severely hinders politicians from debating difference in any other way than what is hegemonically accepted and fits within the programme’s time schedule.
