Evaluation of ground water leaking into the tunnels in rock within project Södra Länken (English)
Abstract [en]

Södra Länken is the southern part of the ring road around the inner city of Stockholm. The traffic route is linking Essingeleden in the west to Värmdöleden in the east. It is about 6 kilometers, of which the main part, about 4,5 kilometers, runs as tunnels in rock mainly below the ground water level. The construction of Södra Länken started in September 1997 and it was opened to traffic Sunday the 24:th of October 2004. The main part of the roads runs as tunnels in rock underneath the central parts of Stockholm. High standards are therefore set for the tunnel to be watertight and according to the Water Court Verdict the ground water level shall not be decreased nearby Södra Länken. An altered ground water level increases the risk for settlements and can also affect the vegetation. For this reason it is highly necessary that the leakage of ground water into the tunnels is evaluated regularly. The purpose of this report was to evaluate the leakage of ground water into the tunnels of Södra Länken. The work was accomplished by studying the flows of water leaking into the tunnels that are measured in the drain water meters placed in the tunnel system. The thesis has shown difficulties producing a true picture of the leakage of ground water into tunnels. Several factors have been found affecting the leakage into the tunnels and the measuring of it. Important factors that affect the leakage of ground water into the tunnels have been found to be the water tightness of the tunnels, the ground water flow at the tunnel level, the type of tunnel, the infiltration, the precipitation and the temperature. The uncertainty by measuring the flow is mainly the metars themselves which are sensitive to particles and therefore easily clog. The calculation of the total flow seems reliable but it has been more difficult to determine the leakage into smaller sections of the tunnel. That can also been seen in the comparison to the predicted leakage into the tunnels where the total predicted leakage correspond with the actual leakage. In smaller sections of the tunnel the correspondence is not that good. Better drain water meters seem to be an important factor that would increase the reliability when leakage of ground water into tunnels is evaluated.
