Syftet med detta masterexamensarbete var att studera aktivitetsbaserade kontor, så kallade AB-kontor, och därefter utveckla ett produktkoncept för EFG (European Furniture Group) som förbättrar AB-kontor för de anställda och därmed förbättrar företagets produktivitet.

Projektet startade med att en bakgrundsstudie genomfördes för att ta del av vad tidigare studier och experter säger om AB-kontor. De tidigare studierna tog upp flera problem men saknade en djupgående förklaring till orsakerna och hur problemen i efterhand kan lösas. Därför gjordes en egen användarstudie på tre olika AB-kontor. Studien innehöll observationer, enkäter och intervjuer. Studien gav insikter om orsakerna till flera problem med AB-kontor och det valdes att jobba vidare med problemet gällande hög ljudnivå och koncentrationssvårigheter, som tidigare studier också uppmärksammat.

Produktkonceptet för att lösa problemet fick namnet Silent Soul och utvecklades som ett tillbehör till EFGs kontorsstol Savo Soul. Silent Soul är en ljuddämpande sufflett som förbättrar arbetsmiljön eftersom den vid behov kan fällas upp och stänga ute omgivningen. Det ljuddämpande materialet som Silent Soul består av är i huvudsak tyget Europost. Silent Soul är formgiven så att den passar bra ihop med Savo Souls design och dimensionerna på produkten bestämdes genom tester av en prototyp. Mekanismen i Silent Soul innehåller en planetväxel, två kuggskenor och två kugghjul och beräkningar verifierar att konstruktionen uppfyller belastningskravet eftersom det inte krävs mer än 16N för att fälla upp suffletten.

För att verifiera att Silent Soul är tillräckligt ljuddämpande behöver det i framtiden göras en akustikutvärdering. Det behöver även göras användartester med en alfa-prototyp och jag bedömer att det kan finnas en större marknad för Silent Soul. Förslagsvis kan produkten lösa problem även i öppna kontorslandskap eller för barn med koncentrationssvårigheter i skolor.

The purpose of this master thesis was to study activity-based offices, so-called ABW-offices, and then develop a product concept for EFG (European Furniture Group) that improves ABW-offices for the employees and thereby improves company's productivity.

The project started with a background study to learn what previous studies and experts say about ABWoffices. The previous studies addressed several problems, but they lacked an in-depth explanation of the causes and how the problems can be solved afterwards. Therefore, a separate user study was conducted at three different ABW-offices. The study included observations, questionnaires and 12 people at each office were interviewed. The study provided insights about the causes of several problems with ABWoffices. The problem that was chosen to focus further on was high noise level and concentration difficulties, which previous studies also highlighted.

The product concept for solving the problem was named Silent Soul and was developed as an attachment for EFG's office chair Savo Soul. Silent Soul is a sound-absorbing convertible top that improves the work environment since it can, when needed, be folded up and shut out distractions from the surroundings. The sound absorbing material that is used consists mainly of the fabric Europost. Silent Soul is designed to fit well with Savo Soul's design and the dimensions of the product were determined by testing on a prototype. The mechanism of Silent Soul contains of a planetary gear, two gear rails and two gear wheels. Calculations verify that the design meets the load requirement since no more than 16N is required to fold up the convertible top.

For future work an acoustic evaluation needs to be done in order to verify that Silent Soul is sufficiently sound absorbing. There is also a need for user tests with an alpha prototype and I believe that there may be a larger market for Silent Soul. For example, the product might as well solve problems in open office landscapes or for children with concentration difficulties in schools.
