Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine psychotherapists' own reflections on secondary traumatization within their profession and its impact on their personal lives. The study is a qualitative study. We have used semi-structured interviews with an inductive approach. The psychotherapist profession can be enriching and create a feeling of making a difference, which can feel like a sense of purpose. However, the profession can contribute to negative effects such as secondary traumatization. We have investigated psychotherapists' own influence, social relations as well as the workplace's support and own coping strategies. The result shows that the work with traumatized family systems influenced the psychotherapist in their personal lives and other social contexts. The informants pointed out the importance of their own coping strategies to cope with their work, as well as the importance of having external and collegial supervision, continuing education and a good working climate.
