Abstract

Relatives care of elderly people. A qualitative study on the consequences and effects of caregiving.

The aim of the study was to gain a deeper understanding of informal caregivers' experiences of the care work which they give to elderly relatives. The study was conducted through eight interviews with adult persons who give care to their elderly relatives. According to the results, caregiving can cause both positive and negative experiences for the caregivers. On one side, the feeling of happiness and satisfaction arises when helping their close relatives. On the other hand, there may be various negative consequences in the form of anxiety, stress, ill health, reducing of workhours, being unable to perform their duties properly, poor concentration, unable to participate in meetings. The municipalities social services can support caregivers through various efforts. Being clear with information and enabling relatives to seek support for their own part, Tret the caregivers with kindness and respect, involve them in care plans, provide quality support and services. Families wish to be seen, listened to and respected. They also need support of the professionals when crisis situations arise. Taking account of their views constitutes an important factor for family caregivers. Relatives also wish to become more involved in support of their relatives.
