Musician or music teacher? Or maybe both? : A survey on music education majors motivations and visions for their future career in music (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

There is currently a shortage of music teachers in Sweden's elementary schools. At the same time, earlier studies indicate that there is a social agenda among students in music teacher education wherein the musicianship has a higher status than the music teacher's profession. In addition, some students will apply for bachelor education instead of starting to work as a music teacher after graduation. The aim of this study was to investigate the motivation of music education students teach music alternatively work as a musician as well as to investigate whether there are any external factors that interact with different motivations. Data collection was done with the help of questionnaires that were distributed to students within music education programs at four different music colleges in Sweden. Subsequently, statistical analysis methods were used to analyze collected data. The results show that music teacher students generally have a low to moderate motivation to work as a music teacher in elementary school, but there are no links between motivations and external factors. It also shows that those who apply for a bachelor education in music after music teacher exams play classical music. These results though cannot be generalized to the chosen population from statistical point of view. This is discussed based on aspects of external and internal motivation. Further studies in the field are needed to find out why the motivation of music teacher students looks like they do.
