Abstract [en]

There is a new phenomenon in Sweden where guardians buy home-math books to support their child in the learning of mathematics or to help them reach higher results in school. The purpose of this study is to analyse (1) which knowledge view these books reflect, (2) what support they provide the guardians in their role as a teacher (3) and what attitude is found among the guardians in relation to this material. The study's results were obtained through a content analysis of textbooks and a digital survey capturing guardians’ attitudes. The survey reveals that some guardians buy math books to support their child’s learning because they believe the school lacks when it comes to teaching mathematics to their child. The textbook analysis is based on the “knowledge view” which, according to Carlgren (2013) is represented by Facts, Understanding, Skills and Familiarity, the four F:s in Swedish. The knowledge view is based on facts, which then leads to understanding. Understanding provides the prerequisite for skill and this, in turn, contributes to familiarity through reflection on the subject. The analysed results show that the materials mainly contain a Facts-based content that equals to an E-level grade knowledge requirement in the school's curriculum. Furthermore, the results show that these materials do not cover the complete knowledge view, but rather should be seen as a complement to the regular teaching in school. The analysis highlights the abilities children train when using this kind of material at home. This study’s target group is guardians (the buyers) and teachers.

Abstract [sv]

Det finns ett nytt fenomen i Sverige där vårdnadshavare köper hem matematikböcker för att stödja sitt barn i inlärningen av matematik eller för att hjälpa dem att höja sina resultat. Syftet med denna studie är att analysera (1) vilken kunskapssyn dessa böcker återspeglar och (2) vilket stöd de ger vårdnadshavaren som undervisare samt (3) vilken inställning som finns hos vårdnadshavarna när det kommer till detta material. Studiens resultat har kommit fram genom en läromedelsanalys samt en digital enkät. Resultaten visar att en del vårdnadshavare köper matematikmaterial till sina barn för att de upplever att skolan inte räcker till i sin undervisning. Teorin för läromedelsanalysen bygger på en kunskapssyn som enligt Carlgren (2013) bygger på Fakta, Förståelse, Färdighet och Förtrogenhet, dessa kallar Carlgren de fyra F:en. Kunskapssynen grundar sig i Fakta och som sedan leder till förståelse. Förståelsen ger förutsättning för Färdighet och detta bidrar i sin tur till Förtrogenhet genom reflektion i ämnet. Analysen belyser de förmågor som barnen tränar på när de använder denna sorts material hemma. De analyserade resultaten visar att materialen främst innehåller ett faktabaserat innehåll som motsvarar E-nivån för kunskapskraven i skolans läroplan. Resultaten i denna studie visar att de granskade materialen inte innehåller alla fyra F:en inom Carlgrens (2013) kunskapssyn, utan snarare bör ses som ett komplement till den ordinarie undervisningen. Denna studie riktar sig främst till vårdnadshavare (som är köparen) samt till pedagoger.
