Animals in Persiles: A Case of Paradiastole in Chiasm

Abstract [en]

The present work analyses one example from an inventory of more than a hundred cases of representations of animals, references to animals and animal-like implications in the Persiles, not considering the repetitions, the plurals and the diminutives. After a brief contextualization, a paradiastole is examined from a rhetorical perspective, and the convenience of extending the studies to obtain more sustained conclusions is considered. We conclude that the example studied reinforces the idea that also in his posthumous novel, Cervantes made use of animal figures, representations and implications in order to subtly criticize the absolutism of monarchs and princes.
