Conceptual design of production systems for heavyequipment manufacturing : Opportunities and constraints in theory and practice (English)
Abstract [en]

An expansion of an already existing production presents challenges from a productionengineering perspective. The challenges lie partly in ensuring that the new productionstructure optimally serves the requirements imposed on the production, but also inpromoting improvements in quality and elimination of problems, known as unknowns,which already exists in the production. Before an expansion, SPD in Sala wants toinvestigate how a new production facility should be designed and organized, this inorder for the production in the new plant to be able to maintain a higher tempo andquality than the current plant. The work is based on examining the company and its products first, carrying outunstructured qualitative interviews with management and employees, gatheringempirical data and then, with the support of well-established literature in the field, theorize possible concepts that would meet the challenge well or in the other hand, alleviate the problems identified at present day. The result consists of two possible layout concepts based on different process-systems, as well as concrete proposals that on their own would lead toimprovements in quality, work safety and reduction of lead times on the company'sproducts, but mainly served as a background to the design of the layout concepts, asthese improvements have as far as possible been incorporated into the concepts. The conclusion is that companies that have limited their time and resources to solvingproduction and quality-related problems in their processes have potentially greatprofits to do if they all have these in mind when working towards increasedproduction and investing in a new production facility.
