Election films and their role in Sweden during WWII : A research of messages in election films during the war period 1939-1945 (English)
Abstract [en]

The aim of this research was to examine what message the political parties in Sweden wanted to convey in election films during the years 1939-1945. The goal was to discover both explicit and implicit messages. To conduct this research, a content analysis with a rhetorical focus was used.

Some of the discoveries in this research was that the political parties wanted to convince the voters that the military was capable of defending the country against foreign powers. Another distinct discovery was that the parties’ spoke highly of past accomplishments regarding social reforms and that they wanted to assure the voters of future efforts. Distinguishable differences regarding politics could be noticed between Socialdemokraterna and Högerpartiet regarding economics and government involvement in enterprise.

All the rhetorical methods of persuasion could be discovered in the films. The easiest to distinguish of the three was logos, which alludes to the electors’ common sense and ability to make rational decisions.
