The Public Library : a Place for Integration (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to research public librarians view of the public library as a meeting place and how it may contribute to facilitate social integration. To study this we have asked the following research questions: How do public librarians work with the public library as a meeting place? And how do they contribute conditions for “soft inclusion”? The method we have used for this study is semi-structured interviews. Seven public librarians from the Gothenburg area were interviewed and the empirical material was analyzed using qualitative content analysis. As a theoretical foundation we have used Dorte Skot-Hansens model of the public library as a third place and Mikael Stigendals theory on social inclusion. Furthermore have we used research on the public library as a meeting place and social integration as a complement to the model and the theory. Conclusions from the material gathered is that public librarians see the public library as a meeting place with potential to contribute to integrating individuals and groups with one another. The librarians’ foremost method was to attract visitors with activities aimed at certain target groups. According to the librarians the result of people meeting others different from themselves at the public library could lead to better understanding and tolerance between individuals. The purpose of this thesis is to research public librarians view of the public library as a meeting place and how it may contribute to facilitate social integration.
