”Hypermarket books” or ”’The library of Babel”- where are we heading? A critical discourse analysis of the privatization debate autumn 2010-spring 2011 (English)
Abstract [en]

The subject of this bachelor thesis is the debate regarding privatization of public libraries. The purpose is to investigate how privatization is portrayed in different articles and by different participants. The articles used are from two of Sweden’s largest national daily papers: Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet and two of Sweden’s largest library magazines: Biblioteksbladet and Tidskriften BiS: Bibliotek i Samhälle. The questions asked are: how is privatization portrayed? What discourses can be traced in the texts? And: can one foresee a future aiming towards privatization? In order to answer these questions Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis was used as a theoretical and methodological viewpoint. The discourses found were named: The value ground discourse, the market liberal discourse and the pragmatic discourse. It was found that these discourses defined privatization in different terms and that the basic differences were due to ideology. The result showed that either one emphasized change and renewal or value ground and tradition. As to the third question regarding a possible future towards privatization, no definite answer could be made. However one can conclude that the tendency due to privatization is dependent on political conditions and that the pre privatization condition in society is strong at the moment.
