Mediating discovery tools in higher education libraries : A survey of instructing librarians' attitudes towards discovery tools and how they mediate these through reference interviews and user training (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to examine how Swedish higher education librarians mediate discovery tools to its users. This study aims to investigate higher education librarians’ general attitudes towards discovery tools, their perception of students’ discovery tool usage, and how they mediate discovery tools to students through reference interviews and user training. The empirical ground of this study is a semistructured survey that was answered by 115 instructing librarians. The study concludes that although librarians generally have a critical attitude towards discovery tools they also think that the discovery tools serve a useful purpose, especially as a starting point in the information search process. The study also concludes that librarians generally perceive students’ attitudes towards discovery tools as positive, although students do not always use the tools to their full potential. The librarians also raised the importance of user training that is less focused on teaching search techniques and more focused on information literacy.
