For Joy and Profit : a comparative study in selection of fiction literature in bookshops and libraries concerning factors as the market, demand and quality (English)
Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to investigate how purchasing managers in bookshops and public librarians reason with regards to their selection of fiction literature. Nine interviews have been conducted in this qualitative study made in the spring of 2013; four librarians, four book merchants, as well as a market director of a major chain of bookstores. Our focus has been particularly directed to ascertaining what influence the cultural-political mission of libraries have had on the process of selection, as well as the extent to which factors such as demand and quality play a part in both organizations. We have been interested in seeing how libraries and bookstores compare with regards to these factors, because of obvious differences in their goals and purposes. Librarians see both the benefits and flaws in their way of working, as well as in the way in which bookstores conduct their business, and vice versa, that they are often successful in cooperating, like when arranging visits from authors etc. Bibliotekstjänst, purchase suggestions from users, the librarians own proposals are the sources for the libraries’ selection. The decisions are made with respect to quality, content and public value. The user influence have increased, and the users’ satisfaction factor is highly important. The book merchants were sometimes controlled from the head offices in their selection, but had the freedom of buying books from local authors, and the customers demand also had an influence. They have in common that their selection is highly influenced by the media.
