A Good Book. Opinions about Fiction and Reading among Adult Students (English)
Abstract [en]

This study is based on 26 essays about A Good Book, written by as many participants in Swedish classes in secondary education for adults. The object is to analyse the students' views on fiction and reading: What books they prefer, but also why and how they read. Objectivity and subjectivity in literary criticism is also discussed. Most favoured author both among men and women is Stephen King. The majority of the books mentioned are translated from English. The women also read historical and psychological novels while the men prefer fantasy. The question whether a book is good or not is in the students' opinion only a matter of taste. They also defend their own l reading against all kinds of literary expertese. Mostly the students read for pleasure, but they also think that fiction can provide useful information e.g. facts about other countries. They like to get deeply involved in the books they read and so there is a difference, not only between what books they like to read and what they are asked to read at school, but also between their personal response to literature and the analytical approach favoured by the educational system.
