Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to examine information behaviours amongst a group of social anthropologists. The thesis also has a special focus on issues concerning information and information behaviour during periods of ethnographic fieldwork. As a empirical foundation for this study interviews where made between may – september in 2011 with seven social anthropologists active at a swedish university. The results from the conducted interviews are analysed with the theoretical framework of the information behaviour theory as presented by T.D Wilson. Furthermore the concept of “information worlds” by Paul T. Jeager and Gary Burnett is another theoretical viewpoint in this thesis. Results in this study shows that the social anthropologists during periods of ethnographic fieldwork, in addition to the empirical data gathering process by participant observation and similar methods, actively search for relevant information in other information sources. These types of information seeking amongst the social anthropologists in this study shows strong connections to the intervening variables presented in T.D Wilson´s models of information behaviour. Overall the study shows that it´s possible to observe a notable change in the information behaviour amongst the social anthropologists during ethnographic fieldwork. The empirical data collection presents by natural reasons a big time consuming part of the fieldwork. But the study also reveals different perceptions and views amongst the social anthropologists on issues concerning searching and using different types of information sources, and especially issues concerning theoretical literature and likewise during fieldwork.
