A welcoming, responsive, inspiring and unpretentious Meeting Space that is open for everyone : an Analysis of how a modern Public Library describes its Activities (English)
Abstract [en]

The public library´s overall purpose and legitimacy is an always relevant subject for discussion in Library and Information Science and in public debate on libraries. Libraries are a part of a bigger societal context and are thus inevitably influenced by societal changes. In this thesis we have studied different roles and functions of the public library, as seen from documents published by one specific public library in Malmö - Garaget. As basis we have used an analysis model of the library in the knowledge and experience society made by Jochumsen, Hvenegaaard Rasmussen och Skot-Hansen (2010). Our purpose has been to examine which ideas and notions on the functions of the public library that can be found in Garaget’s documents and in the model – and to discuss them from a discoursive point of view. In our understanding of discourse and power structures within the discourse we were influenced by Foucault. We found that what is said in Garaget’s documents, in many ways, can be considered coherent with the ideas expressed in Jochumsen et al:s model. Among the more central themes we found examples of how the public library’s functions are becoming broader, and also that library users are allowed (and expected) to play an increasingly central part in defining the actitivites of the library.
