The attitude towards comics : a study of librarians’ attitudes towards comics and their treatment in the library. (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to study the attitude towards comics among librarians as well as their personal image of the overall attitude towards comics among librarians and the manner in which the attitude of the librarians affects how the comics are treated in the library. I have performed this study with a qualitative approach and have interviewed a total of five librarians working in two different libraries. I have founded the theoretical base for my research in a number of historical attitudes towards comics and then compared these attitudes towards the answers given in the interviews as well as prior research found in three theses written by Magnus Johansson, Sarah Johansson and Karin Esaiasson. The results of the study is that traces of most of the historical attitudes can be found among all of the interviewed librarians but that none of them are harboring any negative attitudes towards comics themselves. On the other hand the study does imply that the image of the librarian who only thinks that comics are meant for children is still very much alive in the collective subconscious of the librarians. The study also shows that while librarians of today tend to have a neutral outlook in comics the historically subpar treatment of comic in the libraries and the subsequent lack of academic support on the subject have made it necessary for the librarian in charge of the comic-section to have a personal interest/liking for comics to be able to do a good job.
