Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Puberty may be a difficult time for adolescents. Being diagnosed with cancer at that time can be hard for both the adolescent and its family. What need to be examined more detailed are which emotions that can arise in an adolescent and its family in conjunction with a cancer diagnosis.

Aim: To examine which emotions can arise in an adolescent and its family members in connection with a cancer diagnosis.

Method: A descriptive literature study as a method was used. Eleven qualitative studies from CINAHL, PsycInfo and PubMed was received and the results that answered to the purpose of this study got complied. Joyce Travelbees nursing theory was used.

Results: The cancer diagnosis affected both the adolescent and the family members, which often brought reactions of shock. Feelings like anger, fear and worry were some that frequently occurred. Thoughts surrounding death, the eventual body change often appeared as well as feelings of injustice. It’s important that the actions from health professionals are supporting and permeated by sympathy along with empathy. Every conversation with the involved should be individualized, age adopted and informative.

Conclusion: When healthcare professionals respond to a shocked adolescent and family, the conversation should be personalized. Along with the shock, the parties involved can among other things feel fear, sadness and uncertainty about the future. Simultaneously with the puberty, the cancer diagnosis can contribute to a complex self-image. Further Research on the subject is required to clarify the exact psychosocial approach in the diagnosis stage.
