The Electricity Model for China – Insights and Implications of Energy Policies

Abstract [en]

China remains one of the largest producer and consumer of energy in the world. An understanding of the complex nature of the energy resources in this country is of a high interest due its impacts on global scale. In this Thesis, the electricity supply system of China is modelled using the medium to long-term open source energy modelling system tool OSeMOSYS. Three scenarios are developed and analysed. A Reference scenario that incorporates into the model the country´s current energy policies and targets. A Renewable energy scenario that represents the reaction of the energy system based on an ambitious penetration of renewable energy technologies as well as a Climate change scenario. The latter one, provides an assessment of the electricity sector based on the emission limit set to achieve under the Paris Agreement "below 2 degrees climate goals". Finally, comparison is made between all three scenarios and results show that the energy policies and the current ambitious penetration of renewable energy technologies are not sufficient in meeting the climate change goals in the short term.

Kina är fortfarande en av världens största tillverkare och konsument av energi. En förståelse för den komplexa naturen i energiresurserna i detta land är av stort intresse på grund av dess inverkan på en global skala. I denna uppsats modelleras elförsörjningssystemet i Kina med hjälp av det medellånga till långsiktiga energikodningssystemet OSeMOSYS med öppen källkod. Tre scenarier utvecklas och analyseras. Ett referensscenario som inkorporerar modellen i landets nuvarande energipolicy och mål. Ett förnybart energiscenario som representerar energisystemets reaktion baserat på en ambitiös expansion av förnybar energiteknik samt ett klimatförändringsscenario. Den senare ger en bedömning av elsektorn baserat på den utsläppsgräns som ska uppnås enligt Parisavtalet "under 2 graders klimatmål". Slutligen görs en jämförelse mellan alla tre scenarierna och resultaten visar att energipolitiken och den nuvarande ambitiösa expansionen av förnybar energiteknik inte är tillräckligt för att uppfylla klimatmålen på kort sikt.
