Abstract [sv]

Nyckelord: Känslor, livskvalitet, barn, diabetes mellitus, upplevelse.

Abstract [en]

Background: Type-1 Diabetes Mellitus is one of the most common diseases in Swedish children. The disease requires a lot of knowledge and intensive treatment which affects both the healthcare professionals and the children.

Purpose: Describe the children’s experience of living with diabetes type 1.

Method: The study is a systematic literature review based on ten different qualitative articles where researchers have interviewed children with type-1 diabetes. To answer the purpose the results were analyzed and divided into different categories.

Results: Five themes emerged from the results analysis. These themes were troublesome symptoms, fear of exclusion, normalization through adaptation, health personnel did not always meet their needs and concerns about blood glucose levels.

Conclusion: The disease limits the daily life, which means that they can’t always do the same things as healthy children. This makes the children feel different and alone, they strive to live a normal daily life like all other children. The children need increased involvement and become more involved in the conversation with healthcare professionals who should be guided by the child's questions, maturity and ability to participate.

Keywords: Emotions, quality of life, children, diabetes mellitus, experience.
