Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to highlight different types of linguistic challenges that students, according to teachers, encounter when studying algebra. The study is based on the qualitative research method focus group interview, where professional Math teachers have given their descriptions of some linguistic aspects that may pose problems for students in the learning of algebra. In the results, teachers describe that the students are having difficulties regarding the understanding of symbols and concepts, translation into and from algebraic language, and reading comprehension. The teachers' descriptions do not indicate a strict boundary between these linguistic areas but shows that they in different combinations can cause difficulties for the students.

Abstract [sv]

Syftet med den här studien är att belysa olika typer av språkliga utmaningar som lärare beskriver att elever möter i algebraundervisningen. Detta har undersökts med hjälp av den kvalitativa forskningsmetoden fokusgruppintervju, där yrkesverksamma matematiklärare har gett sina beskrivningar av några språkliga aspekter som kan utgöra problem för eleverna i lärandet av algebra. I resultatet beskriver lärarna svårigheter hos eleverna gällande symbol- och begreppsförståelse, översättning till och från algebraiskt språk samt läsförståelse. Lärarnas beskrivningar visar inte på en strikt gräns mellan dessa språkliga områden utan de kan i olika kombinationer orsaka svårigheter för eleverna.
