Abstract [en]

During the multinational crisis respond exercise VIKING18, the Swedish Armed Forces conducted a unique test of an automatic report application connected to the federation of simulators supporting the computer assisted command post exercise. The purpose with this thesis is to research if automatic reports as a concept have the ability to improve the quality at a simulated command post exercises and increase the participant’s knowledge and abilities. The main methods for research were interviews and observations with participants in the exercise control and the training audience. To define what the word quality meant during the exercise, a model was produced with influences from different areas of knowledge. The results from the interviews and observations were analysed against the thesis model for valuating training effects.

The results of the study show that automatic reports as a concept can increase the training effect of staffs, if the software is provided with the right circumstances. Examples of benefits are reduced workload for participants in the exercise control and improvement in traceability and precision in the common operation picture. Time saved and the reduced workload in the exercise control, together with improved traceability and precision in the common operation picture, could be used to making the exercise more realistic. A more realistic exercise would increase the training conditions for participants, which ultimately would lead to better training environment and results.
