School counselors’ work with detecting children who are being sexual abused (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

School counselors’ work with detecting children who are being sexual abused The aim of this study was to investigate how school counselors in elementary school are working to detect children that are exposed to sexual abuse and also how their work can be improved. By interviewing six school counselors we collected data that was analyzed with the systems theory and the stigmatization theory. The results showed that the school counselors are finding it difficult to discover children that are being sexual abused because the children are perceived to be invisible. The results also shows that school counselors experienced difficulties to find time for preventive work. In conclusion, the results shows that to be able to improve their work, the school counselors need more knowledge regarding sexual abuse against children and more time to be able to build relationships with the children and also to bring up the subject for discussion.
