Abstract [sv]

Abstract [sv]

Nursing assistants´ perception of promoting physical activity for people living in care-homes specialized in dementia.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the perception of nursing assistant to promote physical activity in people with moderate and severe dementia living in care-homes specialized in dementia. Nine individual semistructured interviews were conducted. The collected material was analyzed using qualitative content analysis and resulted in nine subcategories that formed four categories; the personal qualities of the nursing assistant, the professional role of the nursing assistant, external factors, and the person with dementia. The result shows that personal qualities, such as attitude to physical activity, commitment and initiative, play a major role in the experience of promoting physical activity. The nursing assistant way of treating and acting towards the person with dementia is perceived as a determining factor and a good physical environment was experienced as stimulating the persons with dementia to activity. Furthermore, the result suggests that cooperation between nursing assistant and physiotherapists as well as occupational therapists can be improved and dementia housing needs sufficient staffing to enable the nursing assistant to use the time required to promote physical activity.
