Abstract [en]

This essay examines how young Basque people use language as a way to position them self in a cosmopolitan context. The aim is to discuss whether or not there is a conflict between the traditional Basque identify and the cosmopolitan identity. The city Bilbao holds a unique position, as the largest city in the Basque country, the populations are deeply rooted in the Basque history meanwhile the city has gone through a fast and significant process of gentrification during the last 20 years. Through discussions with groups of young basque people via internet chats topics such as Basque identity, language and symbolism where discussed. The concept of cosmopolitan identity is that is in conflict with national identity, the people start to rather identify themselves as citizens. The young population of the Basque country uses the Basque language to be connected with the history and the English to connect them with their future and the rest of the world.
