Abstract [en]

Students' view of computer science is in need of more mapping. This is considered important because it’s a generally concerned about the number of dropouts in the discipline of computer science. This work is part of a major research project led by Anne-Kathrin Peters. The project aims to gain a better understanding of how they perceive their studies and how they experience "making and thinking computer science" in their social context. This work aims to provide answers to what first-year students consider their reason to engage in computer science, and whattheir view on computer science is. The work also aims to relate students' views to the professional perspectives on computer science. This is investigated using a qualitative content analysis that is both inductive and deductive. The data in this work are ten interviews conducted by Peters with students from both the computer science program and the civil engineering program in information technology conducted in Uppsala in 2013, when the students have studied for one year. Broadly speaking, the students' views on computer science are compatible with the engineering perspective. The engineering perspective of computer science means that the main goal is to be able to build or create something and study to develop the tools. Students' main reasons for engaging in computer science according to themselves are interests, family, friends and high school education.
