Abstract [sv]

Abstract

Abstract [en]

Abstract

This is a study of the views of six teachers on literary canon used in Swedish schools and Swedish language education. The literary canon is defined as a collection of texts which are regarded as exceptional in literary history, and regarded as the core of a certain culture or literary tradition. The concept has been discussed within comparative literature and in the rest of society. For example, literary canon has been criticized for being too one-sided and for only showing certain types of authors, for example men. It has been suggested that a literary canon should be implemented in Sweden. This has also created a debate. This study shows that the interviewed teachers are more positive towards a literary canon for teaching the history of literature, but that they are less positive towards literary canon when it comes to reading and working with books in school. The study also shows that the teachers relate to a literary canon that is in the educational material, though this is not official in any way. Furthermore, the study shows that the teachers think that the Swedish language education has a greater impact on what is seen as literary canon in society, than the teachers of language education have.
