Abstract [en]

Through the example of author couple Märta and Henrik Tikkanen, this article explores the conditions of artistic work related to gender roles, especially in relation to domestic work and parenting. Traditionally, to engage in creative work has been coded as a masculine activity that absorbs the artist’s whole person. “To be an artist” is often considered to have more to do with one’s identity than with one’s profession. This makes it difficult – sometimes even impossible – to combine with parenting, especially with motherhood, which is also thought to entail the whole being of a person; something that female artists have long attested to. The Tikkanens are unique in that that they write in dialogue with one another, so that they, through their separate individual work create a joint, yet conflicting, story of life together. Märta Tikkanen’s work centers the difficulties of combining the role of wife/mother with that of the artist. She describes her responsibilities towards her loved ones as a barrier, blocking her possibilities to work and be creative. Henrik Tikkanen, on the other hand, portrays love as a means to enhance one’s persona. In his work, love is a helping force, not a hinder. The differences in ability to devote oneself to art characterised by the Tikkanens’ work highlight the importance of understanding symbolic structures of gendered conditions in the art world, rather than understanding artists’ conditions in solely economic-structural terms.
