Abstract [en]

Background: The number of emergency services in Sweden has decreased since 2010, whereas the number of visits has remained the same. The staff has received less time for each patient. One of the main duties of the staff involves a caring encountering. The experience of the caring encounter is subjective and is owned by the patient. There are a number of aspects that can affect the experience of the caring encounter.

Aim of the study: To study how patients experience the caring encounter from staff of emergency services.

Method: A review of qualitative empirical research has been conducted to create an overview of previous research.

Results: Five aspects affecting the caring encounter were identified. These were information, communication, psycho-physical needs, relations and behavior. The experience of receiving emergency care varies between individuals and different emergency services, both nationally and internationally. It is important that the healthcare staff are competent, provide adequate information, communicate well, provide a holistic care, establish relationships with the patients and behave professionally.

Conclusion: The emergency room is a stressful situation for both staff and patients. Patients find themselves in an exposed environment. A number of expectations regarding the caring encounter were identified. In practice, not all expectations are met. This indicates that there is a need for improvement at both individual and structural levels.
