Monumenta lapidum aliquot runicorum: Om runstensbilagan i Verelius’ Gothrici & Rolfi Westrogothiae Regum Historia

Abstract [en]

When Olof Verelius published his edition of the Icelandic sagas Gautreks saga and Hrólfs saga Gautrekssonar in 1664 the book printer Henrik Curio added an appendix comprising 49 woodcuts by Johannes Bureus and some introductory pages with transcriptions and Latin translations of these inscriptions. This is the first corpus edition of a collection of Swedish runestones embracing both text and pictures printed in Sweden. As stated in Curio’s short foreword the aim of the appendix was to promote a planned publication of a larger collection of runestones including an explanation written by a successor to Bureus, Lars Bure. This article discusses who might have been responsible for the transcription and translation of the runic inscriptions in the edition from 1664. A closer examination of the principles adopted for these transcriptions and the wording of the Latin translations shows that they cannot be linked to Lars Bure and probably not to Verelius either. It is therefore suggested that the main author might have been the Icelander Jonas Rugman, who collaborated with Verelius in the translation and edition of the Icelandic sagas in the volume.
