Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

In Sweden, the rate of sick absenteeism is higher for women than for men, which can put increasing demands of employers to gain insight into this problem. The most common causes of women's sick leave are joint- and muscle pain as well as mental illness. Studies show that sick leave may be caused by factors from the work environment, but also the life situation must be taken into consideration when absenteeism in the workplace is mapped. Purpose: This study was done to identify factors that may affect / contribute to women long-term sickness in a manufacturing industry in Sweden, with the focus on the working conditions and the individual's total life situation. Method: The study was conducted as a qualitative study with abductive approach. The interviews were transcribed and analysed using directed content analysis. A total of nine female employees from a manufacturing industry were interviewed. The sample consisted of women, diagnosed with joint and muscle and / or psychiatric diagnosis who were or had been long-term sick. Results: All participants found factors such as increasing workload and a higher work rate contributing to disease. A majority reported a working environment with noise, vibration and shock and work schedules with shift work as contributing to absenteeism. Another problem was insecurity in the management and unclear directives from the organization such as vague expectations on job performance, unclear job roles, inadequate supervision and mentoring, as well as uncertainties regarding the workplace attitude to bullying. Most of the women had had a critical event in their private life, however, no one thought it caused disease. Conclusion: Female absenteeism within a manufacturing industry is affected by work organizational factors and environmental factors as well as women's life situation. The results of this study should be deepened by further research in the present manufacturing industry.
