Abstract [en]

This thesis examines the possibility to provide cooling for the

Uppsala University Hospital by using a snow cooling plant. The reason

for this is to increase the cooling system's resilience and decrease

the dependence on district cooling. This is done by modelling the

possible share of the hospital's cooling demand that can be covered

with snow cooling. Furthermore it's investigated if the pollution

levels in the snow can decreased by treating the meltwater in the

snow cooling plant and if it is economically feasible to use snow

cooling.

Simulations shows that between 1 % and 88 % of the hospital's cooling

demand could be covered with snow cooling depending on the amount of

snow that is accumulated during the winter. If snow cannons are being

used to produce extra snow, between 85 % and 88 % of the cooling

demand can be covered. By treating the meltwater from the snow

cooling plant the levels of metals that leak into the ground can be

reduced. The investment cost of the snow cooling plant was estimated

to 54 893 000 SEK. The operating cost of the snow cooling plant was

estimated to 1328-1428 SEK/MWh when snow cannons were not used and

between 732 and 832 SEK/MWh when snow cannons were used.
